This is from a recording my father made with a friend sometime in the 1940’s before he was married to my mother. I think it was made on a machine that records sound and cuts a record as well. The record itself is made of cardboard and is coated with some sort of material like vinyl. This one is bright orange and is I think seven inches in diameter. The disc has two holes, the regular one in the middle for playing and another one out about an inch from the middle. I guess the second hole was there to secure the disc when a recording was made. The record plays at 78 rpm and the condition of the surface is so poor (the vinyl like surface is actually cracking) that it is almost not playable. I did manage after several attempts to play and record it into a computer. The record was played on a Newcomb phonograph fitted with a General Electric variable reluctance magnetic cartridge. This unit is all vacuum tubes monophonic and is a combination portable PA system and record player with a twelve inch speaker. What is really nice about the amplifier in this unit is that it has a line level output built in and a dual triode 12AX7 vacuum tube as a phono preamplifier. We had one of these at Alhambra High School in Martinez, California where I lived as a teenager and beyond. The recording was done on a PC computer running Windows 2000, with an older Creative Soundblaster Audigy soundcard. I think it was the same computer that I recorded “Ambience Recording June 28th, 2008″(you ought to check that out too) before it was upgraded to Windows XP. I had to use lots of noise reduction and dipped the highs around 6700 hertz down to -3 db to combat the extreme surface noise with Adobe Audition. I don’t think I was very successful, but the surface noise was even worse before processing. The sound here is an MP3 at 128 kilobits per second.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackMy god!!! Wow. This is truly amazing in many, many ways, and sounds fantastic, too. I’ve known the Weatherman since 1978 or so, and I never knew this even existed! Nor did I know that his father had such a strange sense of humor. If anyone reading this has ever heard our CD “O.T.E. Vol.6: THE WILLSAPHONE STUPID SHOW” you’ll notice that David’s father rarely spoke on any of the recordings David made of his family. In fact, I’ve never heard him speak for this long, ever.
David- can you post a picture of the actual disc? I have some of these kinds of recordings myself, found at a garage sale, and mine are orange as well. Probably made by the same company. The record scratching noises you hear throughout A MOST SUCCESSFUL FORMULA on “DISPEPSI” were done using one of those homemade cardboard records.
Wow! Yeah, this is pretty great, all right. Is it just me, or does “Dreamo” have a bit of a sinister edge to it?
Also interesting that your Dad was doing tiny OTE shows on vinyl in the 40’s.
“Say it is’nt so”. I didnt know that was your dad! I thought you found it with those tapes under the house. Glad you were able to get it digitized!! I think it sounds crisp.
Here’s an alternate noise reduction method if you have Adobe Audition 1.5 or later. Record the record to the computer using a stereo phonograph. You’ll probably have to record it at 45 RPM and use the software to speed it up. Once you’ve done this, use the “Center Channel Extractor” located under “Filters.” Start with the “a capela” preset and play with the settings from there. I have found that when I play 78s on a stereo turntable, most of the noise ends up on the left and right channels, and the recorded signal ends up in the center.
By isolating the center channel with this filter, you can reduce much of the noise.
That said, I’m very impressed with the job you did on cleaning up the noise on this recording.
In fact, the sound of this recording has a low frequency warmth that is quite unusual for a homemade record of its time. Hmmm.
What about eliminating the HUMMMM that usually happens when you plug either a stereo turntable, or turntable through pre-amp (or anything else) into a computer? and jd mack: How did you feel about the 45 to 78 digital conversion? I’m so reluctant to bother with that! I just want to find a good player that spins 78s too and figure out how to get it all plugged in with no unwanted noise and hums from electronic sources.
Unfortunately, my little CROSLEY 78 player has no audio-out. If I were the Weatherman, I could just open the machine and make a super-vacuumtube-audio-out …
This is more of a question than a comment. Might this have been from one of the photo-booth style recording “arcades” where you would put a dime in and it would cut you a record right then ?

I haven’t actually seen one of these machines either, but from what I’ve heard years ago from my father was that a friend of his actually owned a record making machine and had it in his house. I think but I’m not certain this recording was made sometime in the late 1930s or early 1940s just before my father joined the armed forces.

I admit I don’t fully understand what is happening with regard to the comments. At the moment I’ll just leave it alone. The strange comments don’t seem to be hurting anything and maybe they kind of add to the total dumbness of it all!
I think I feel a little too complex and extremely wide!
