Here for the first time is the original source material for “The Playboy Channel” from the Negativland release “Escape From Noise.” This is the entire recording, unedited without any audio processing. I must warn you, however, that it is “X” rated!

Just let it explode!
i bet they used an entire can of goo-gone to clean up that mess.
Im getting turned on…..jam your pencil into the spindle hole weatherman.
I also recall hearing this material deep within the folds of Dick Vaughn’s Moribund Music of the ’70’s.
The bit of this used on “The Playboy Channel” sounds fairly noise-free. What sort of audio processing did you have back then to clean up the whooshing cardboard sound?
Do you have anything to help me sleep?
I’m going to hell now, I know it
how do you feel about this since you can have sex every six months
To answer you J. D. Mack, I think I recorded the record onto cassette tape (no filtering or processing) and gave it to Mark Hosler. I don’t know what other audio processing occurred after that time. Back then in the 1980s I certainly didn’t know anything about digital recording and I had no thoughts about ever owning a computer.
And for you Stefonamos and henru, I’ll say that I “relieve” myself in and ONLY in the bathroom once or twice a week.
I cleaned up the tape with some EQ, and that’s about all we had back then to do such things. It was then transferred to reel-to-reel tape and carefully edited to remove all of the dirty words. If you listen carefully to THE PLAYBOY CHANNEL track on “ESCAPE FROM NOISE,” you’ll think you hear something nasty going on, but in fact it’s all G-rated. The backing music on that track was mostly composed and played on a Fairlight for us by Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO using samples he grabbed from un-mixed multi-track masters of some classic Jim Hendrix LPs that Mark had unauthorized access to while they were recording for Warner Brothers. We then extensively re-edited what he made so as to fit Davids Playboy rant. On that visit to LA to get the tape he made for us, we got to see Marks extensive collection of his own boogers, kept in his home in a large mason jar.
David and Mark, thanks for your responses. I was without a computer for a bit and didn’t see this until tonight.
So, was Mark’s jar “a marvel to be seen, dysentery green”?
You’re thinking of a different “Mothers” that doesn’t end with “baugh”!
what was on side b?
wait, plastics usually didn’t have side b’s, nevermind
File not found – would love to hear this!
