Here I’m testing a new inexpensive digital camera. It’s a Vivitar model DVR 785HD with up to 5.1 megapixel still image resolution. Also, it can record 720p high definition video with monophonic sound from the built-in microphone and the camera can be used underwater.

The video was shot with only normal lights in my kitchen and living room and it features a bicycle horn underwater, various items in my kitchen and a very uncooperative action figure of Moses. Look close and you will see the original Booper (Super Booper) which I made in the 1970s. Don Joyce sent it to me for repair. It appears the problem is with the battery holder.

This could be my first product review and I guess to sum it up, this camera might be called “A poor man’s GoPro.”Vivitar DVR 785HD Pro Action Camera Camcorder

I spent a few days trying to make the sound louder and clearer without adding distortion. I used “envelope” in Adobe Audition to manually affect the audio level. What do you think? I may have done too much or not. In addition, I added reverberation on the last moment of sound at the end of each part. Enjoy!

This is a recording of an analog, audio only baby room monitor from September eighteenth of this year. It was received on my software defined radio  in my computer, located in my living room. Go here for more information on the Software Defined Radio I’m using. The reception is very poor, and at first I thought it was unusable. After listening to the recording, I noticed that enough of the sound revealed the baby was extremely upset. The poor reception, I think, made this recording more disturbing.

Here is another screen capture of my software defined radio. See my post “Screen Capture Test ” for more information. This time I used Daum Potplayer to capture the image and  made a flash file “on the fly,” simultaneously. I noticed the aspect ratio was not standard like 640×480, but 958×718, which is still close to 4×3. Let me know if you can view the video.

Finally, a couple of additional laundry detergent bottles that screw together!

Xcel and Arm & Hammer

Here is what I think is a good way to insure that you do not waste liquid laundry detergent. To make this work, check the threads on the cap and note if they are on the inside or the outside of the cap. If the cap is threaded on the inside, then your next purchase of detergent should have a cap that is threaded on the outside. If your first bottle of detergent has a cap threaded on the outside make sure your next bottle of detergent has a cap threaded on the inside. So far, I’ve discovered that every time I have two bottles of laundry detergent with threaded caps inside and outside, I can screw the two bottles together exactly as if the bottles have their own caps in place.

When a bottle of detergent is low, I simply connect the almost-empty bottle to the new bottle and let it sit on top overnight, but sometimes the bottle on top won’t drain all of the detergent out as it sits this way.  After the detergent bottles have been sitting this way for at least eight hours, tip the bottles left and right, forward and back, up to about forty-five degrees while they are still connected, to allow any remaining liquid in the top bottle to flow to the bottom bottle. Once this is done and you are sure all the detergent is out of the top bottle, it can be unscrewed and placed in your recycling container. Of course, if you are fussy about laundry detergent and always want the same brand for example, all of this cannot apply.

Here is a recording of rain, distant thunder, birds, and cars on the street sometime between 5:30 AM and 7 AM on this day. I used my Sony PCM-D50 digital recorder set at 44.1 kHz and 24 bit .wav file. The recorder was set up at the doorway to the deck  behind my house in Seattle. Then An mp3 was made at  44.1 kHz and 320 kilobits per second, using the LAME MP3 encoder.
I figured I was pretty lucky to get this, because generally in my opinion the weather in Seattle is similar to California with respect to the the fact that most precipitation happens in the late fall and winter. Seattle simply receives much more rain than California. This doesn’t account for the extreme drought conditions, but for a normal season for California.

Here is my recording of the 4th of July, 2014. I used the same setup as last year, beginning at about 9:58 PM, and ending around 11 PM.  I recall a comment about the lack of bass response from last year. The peak level for last year was -.33db and this time it’s a little louder at -.29 db.
