Those are great tapes! There’s something weirdly hypnotic about the Scrabble conversations, albeit in a strangely, vicarious kind of way. To me it’s a little weird because your Grandmother sounds a lot like my Grandmother’s voice. And the little musical interludes are the hidden gem in these recordings.
What are those little tones at about 8:15? are they simply xylophone notes that are over-modulated?
What is the instrument that comes right after that? It sounds like a little dulcimer.
I also like the haircut discussion that mutates into something about Lawrence Welk.
Thanks so much for sharing these!
If I am remembering correctly,I had recently purchased my Sony TCD5M cassette recorder and I was creating an attack delay effect with the same instrument(small xylophone) my mother was playing on this recording. I would strike a note and then quickly fade up the record level. If you listen closely, you can hear the background noise come up as the mic level is faded up. The other instrument is a ukulele. By the way, I do not know how to play a ukulele correctly. Sorry, I know that sounds dumb!
Dear Mr. Weatherman, it’s me Omer, owner and operator of Over The Edge. There is such difficulty in communicating with you directly that I’m asking this question here in hopes you will see it sooner. Now I have much better things to do than check out this dumb stupid page for your reply so why don’t you send me an email through Pastor Penis’s super duper email technology (if you don’t use email yourself).
Question: Do you have any family tapes from the years ’87, ’88, and ’89? Stuff not on the OTE CDs? I’d like to include anything you have that nobody’s heard from those years in wrapping up my current “How Radio Was Done” series on OTE. Since we played so many of your family tapes on OTE during those years, I consider them broadcast material, at least for Negativland broadcasts. Let me know or send copies of anything good from those years… I can’t use hours and hours of it so maybe you could even edit up a tape or disc of unknown shorter bits and gems from those 3 years? Maybe under 20 minutes per clip? But I’m not too strict about the dates of origin because we could have been playing older (not newer!) tapes during those 3 years on OTE.
Yours In Radio,
Omer D. Edge
(If possible, PLEASE indicate the best way to reach you with email text (the only kind I have) directly for important entertainment business for which the world is waiting.)
no one has heard from the weatherman since feb.5th when he went e.v.a. to check the alignment of the ae-35 unit on his roof.
