Direct Mp3 download or play: Christmas 1979 – Part 2
Finally, I located the original recording from the first Negativland record featuring my grandmother saying “This is Negativland,” etc. On part 1, go to 30:04 to hear just that part. There’s another 30 minutes or more of this recording to come. I’ll add it here to this post in the next few days. I wanted to get at least part of the recording posted before the end of Thanksgiving Day 2016. Have a laugh! Enjoy.
I just added Part 2, today on November 27th, 2016.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackSomething that your grandmother does (or did) that fascinates me (as it also did with one of my own grandmothers, who did the same thing) is when she sometimes repeats random words or phrases that have just been said to her (by your mom, for instance) for no apparent reason. You wonder what exactly the thought processes are when doing that, as there also never seems to be any level of real “engagement” in the general tone of the conversation at the time.
That’s interesting. I haven’t thought much about it, but it does add something. Maybe the fact that I had a talk-back system working where recordings of their previous conversations could be played and then they could react and comment. An example is in Part 1 between -27:10 and -24:57 on the regular player (4:18 and 6:32 on direct download). The original version can be heard on my post: “Untitled Family Tape From Mid 1970s” – water heater-head in curlers-whistling – Part 2 at about -17:57 on the regular player or 6:03 on direct download. I hope that makes sense! I’ve put up Part 2 of this post, just today.
Your mother and grandmother sounded like great people.
I wish you well David. I hope you’re doing alright.
Thank you. My parents were definitely fun! Keep your fingers crossed. With any luck, there may be some more home videos before Christmas. You might also like this: “Birthday – April 3rd, 1987”
I was listening to this recording because it reminds me of the talk at family gatherings when I was a kid. There was a certain format for the talk at family gatherings back in those days. I’m not sure it still goes that way. In my family, most of those people are gone now. It reminds me of my family and my best friends’ family.
Anyway, I had been playing some mellow Pink Floyd in the background while listening to your family recording. Consequently, I really lost it when they all started talking about Pink Floyd and you suggested it as a cat’s name! Suddenly, the recorded chat became a live, interactive event. 😀
Thanks for sharing this!
