Part 1
Part 2
Here is a recording of Richard Lyons and myself on the first Thanksgiving I celebrated after my parents and grandparents passed away. It features the sounds of kitchen appliances, pots, pans, and it takes place at my parents home in Martinez, California. Richard’s wit and my obsessive compulsiveness show throughout. I used my Superscope C-104 cassette recorder and a RadioShack condenser microphone capsule for recording. You may have noticed I categorized this as a “Family Tape” as Richard was pretty much like a brother and a member of Negativland, as well.

A small technical note of my own – do you not think the tape might be running a tad fast? Your voices sounded a touch higher pitched to me. I’m going to put it in Audacity and slow it down a little to see if that does anything. I will report back with my results. This is also something I’ve had to do with some of the archived OTE shows, where there have been cases of ones that have run both a little fast and slow. Ah, the good ol’ imprecise days of cassettes!
Thank you, Leona, for noticing the pitch of our voices being off. I’ve been thinking about that since I posted this recording. Maybe I’ll do it over and split it into two parts. The next post
“Televents Cable TV Dispatch Early 1980s” was done the same way and seems fine, so I’m guessing the recorder (Superscope C-104) I used back in 2000 was running slightly slow. I hope my main playback cassette recorder,(Sony TC-D5M)isn’t starting to go bad.
Well, don’t take my word for it as gospel lol. But it does sound like maybe you heard it also?
Actually, there was a very odd bit of timing for me here with this, related to both the speed (and subject). Just this past week I happened to discover the OTE show from 1990 that was a Dick Vaughn retrospective. Don’t know how I missed it before. And that show turned out to be one of the ones I was referring to. I had to speed it up a touch under 3% to get it sounding right.
In listening to it, I also realized that either a) the original SST cassette was created from this show, or b) Don was giving the cassette a first run-through on the show. I’m always fascinated when there are different versions of things so you can sort of see some of Don’s editing technique at work and in progress. (Which can also be heard and observed from the original, undedited California Superstation tape from 1983 in this instance.)
As you may have surmised by now, that particular show/release is one of my absolute favorites, possibly even my #1 favorite. I know that sucker backwards and forwards – including all the commercials!
I’ve reprocessed the audio which added a little over two minutes to the total time. It has been split into two parts, each running a little over forty-eight and a half minutes. I think the pitch is probably pretty close, but not perfect. Enjoy!
Yep, definitely sounds more correct and “normal” now. A job well done, sir.
I give this recording 17 squirts of Formula 409! This is certainly bound for my Negativland playlist.
Thank you, Leona and Ed!

i need more stuff like this posted. i’ve been listening to the weatherman, who is my favorite, for about 37 years now.
