The audio effects were created from a VST plugin called Argotlunar. Other posts with my bicycle horn are here, here, here, and here.

Here is a numbers station recorded on May 26th, 2016. It is from WebSDR and a receiver located in The Netherlands. The original mono recording was processed by changing the audio to stereo, adding phase shifting effect, and then delaying one side. I’m using the WordPress player rather than the regular “weatherman theme” audio player. This player should perform better.
While tuning my Airspy software defined radio (SDR) at my location in Seattle, I stumbled onto this broadcast on a band meant for two-way radio communications such as police, fire departments, taxis, Family Radio Service (FRS), General Mobile Radio Service(GMRS), both analog and digital. I listened closely to the poor sound quality and managed to type in a Google search and came up with “Harvard Sentences.” After listening for awhile I noticed certain lists of sentences were playing in a certain order and then looping. At approximately 4 minutes and 43 seconds list 59 begins “Every word and phrase he speaks is true.” Then after list 57 “Prod the old mule with a crooked stick.” at about 11 minutes and 12 seconds, the groups of sentence lists repeat in the same order. I guess a beginning and ending could be anywhere in the groups of sentences, but to me, it seemed like “Every word and phrase he speaks is true.” is a logical starting point. Here’s an interesting article about the “Harvard Sentences.”
I don’t know why this is being broadcast, but in the late 1970s and early 1980s, I recall 454 to 455 and 152 to 153 megahertz being used by the telephone company for mobile phone calls. This, of course, would have been before cellular. Here is a full list of sentences. Any thoughts on this matter?

The first recording was made on April 19, 2017, 2:39:11 PM and this last sample aaudio-only recording was made over 11 hours later. This recording shows the loop point where list 57 ends and list 59 begins. I think “085709Z” in the SDRSharp file name is the universal time. In other words, 8 hours, 57 minutes, 9 seconds is 1:57 AM and 9 seconds pacific daylight time. The “Z” is for Zulu, which is another name for universal time.

Here is my favorite episode of one of my all time favorite TV shows. This method of posting (embedding) is new to me, but it does appear to work. Be aware the content could go away, but for now, enjoy.
Here is a show I’m somewhat inspired by, but definitely disturbs me. Unfortunately, it reinforces me to be a recluse, especially after losing my best friend and housemate of forty years, Richard Lyons of Negativland. As you may know, he passed away on his birthday, April 19th, 2016 at the age of 57. There is a possibility that I may never visit a doctor or own a smart phone and this episode really shows how nasty the future could be.
By the way, on a lighter note, this post is somewhat of a test to try out the WordPress video player instead of my normal Flash player. The video properties (according to my computer) indicate there is no Flash video. Let me know if the video plays, especially if you are using Android or IOS. This is a low quality version with no direct download link, and a lot of the ending credits are missing. If you like what you see, get Netflix and watch it there. Here are a couple of links: Black Mirror – Episode Guide – for the early UK episodes – This link is now dead. It’s interesting to me how the UK Channel 4 disassociated itself from “Black Mirror.” Black Mirror – IMDb – for everything else

I think I stumbled onto several feeds of wireless microphones from a performance. Actually, I was searching for a PA system wireless mike feed from the big fair we have in Seattle every year at the beginning of August, called Seafair. There was one signal at about 513.2 megahertz that appeared to be the KIRO – TV channel 7 audio, but they were very careful to cut off their mikes during commercials. Channel 7 televises Seafair every year. The signals were all wide band FM, and due to the great distance (possibly over a mile), there was a lot of fading and drop outs. The large wide areas that show up on the display while tuning, and appear to be strong signals are local digital ATSC(Advanced Television Systems Committee) Seattle TV channels. I used SDRSharp and Airspy to receive wth a simple ground plane verticle antenna, extended to about 5 and a half inches. The antenna is mounted on a microphone stand, inside my house. Screen capture was done with Potplayer.

Here are some outtakes from “Fetch My Cigarettes,” a video Negativland and I made in the early 1980s. This video may also be known as “David, Where Are My Cigarettes?” and it became part of the compilation of videos called “No Other Possibility.”

It has been awhile, so I figured I’d make something for Halloween. I downloaded Audacity (free digital audio recorder and editor) onto a notebook computer ( Dell Inspiron 11, 3000 series) and hummed “oowee” into the built-in stereo microphone. This is the result. Have a goofy, dumb Halloween!

Here is probably one of the most fun and memorable times of being on the radio on Over The Edge with Don Joyce. As far as I know, it was from the year 2000.
The winner, first place – Peppermint and Wintergreen Altoids at the same time.
Second place – Citrus Orange Blitz
Third place – Velamints Chocolate Mints
Fourth place – Mentos Cool Chews
Last place – Ice Breakers Cool Mint – made me feel “gothic.”
The Club Soda: Calistoga Sparkling Water, 1997 label.
This small fuzzy image is all I could find of this label style, which I think was still being used in the year 2000, when I was on Over The Edge.

This video shows software defined radio software operating as a digital audio effects processor. The source is Winamp with its DirectSound Output and WaveOut Output set to line 1 of Virtual Audio Cable. Virtual Audio Cable (VAC) line 1 is routed to SDRSharp soundcard input. The SDR window is precisely sized to 960 x 540 pixels (16 x 9 aspect ratio) using a free pixel measuring (Cropper) program. In addition, VST effects can be applied simultaneously in Winamp using a VST host. The video and audio was screen captured using Daum PotPlayer. Finally, the media file was trans-coded to Flash. Just now, (March 2nd, 2018) I eliminated the Flashplayer and now use the WordPress player.
I’ve updated the audio file with the dynamic range expanded to 0 db. The loudest part, which was as much as 10 db above 0, just after 6:27 was clip repaired manually (each sample hand drawn) to minimiize pumping effects of compression. I’m including a lossless FLAC file for downloading, too.

Here is my recording of a thunderstorm in Seattle on August 12th, 2015. This is probably the best recording of thunder I’ve ever made. What makes this one particularly good is a distinct beginning, middle, and end. It starts slow with ambiance, then several close lightning strikes with sharply loud thunder, followed by heavy rain. The rain tapers, thunder becomes more distant, and the storm ends with more ambient noises. Some of the sounds were from inside my house, such as dishes being washed and other kitchen clatter.
The recording was made using my Sony PCM-D50 recorder placed on a microphone stand, facing out from the sliding glass door in my living room. The built-in condenser microphones were adjusted to 120 degrees, wide stereo. I put a thin layer of tissue paper over the front of the recorder to minimize wind noise.
There is clipping and dynamic range compression effects on some of the loudest audio. If I had allowed for the maximum amount of dynamic range with no clipping, the lowest level of audio would have been almost too quiet. Of course this is my own opinion. Feel free to disagree!

These are angry YouTube cats, and I guarantee they mean business! Be aware, the incredible amount of amplification from VST plugins did bring out some whining “aliasing” distortion, but hopefully not too much.

Here are just a few of the over fifty TV channels I can receive over the air. I am using a SiliconDust HDHomerun Connect, model HDHR4-2US with an unamplified Mohu Leaf indoor antenna. The TV tuner is connected to my computer via the spare Ethernet port (ASUS motherboard has dual Ethernet ports, internet on the other port). The tuning of the digital channels and recording was done using Daum Potplayer, an excellent free software media player available online. I discovered the channels could be changed while recording and there was no editing. The transitions are not perfect, but just imagine trying to do that with a VCR. The recorded file was first a (Matroska multimedia container) .mkv, H.264 video at 5000 kbps, and audio an (Advanced Audio Coding) AAC -Libav.dll at 128 kbps, sample rate 48000 hertz, selectable in Potplayer. Then I ran the file through Video Container Changer, (more great free software) to make the video have a .flv or flash extension, which is what the website needs. Be sure to let the file load for awhile, for a better chance of uninterrupted playback.

Does anyone remember this music from the early 1980s? This was often playing on the TV at my job in the Televents Cablevision office in Martinez, California, usually early in the morning. I would be organizing work orders for my cable TV installations and this would play for what seemed like for minutes at a time.
