Direct mp3 download or play: K-Mart is Coming
This is the radio commercial, probably from the early 1970s, for the grand opening of this and other Kmart stores. The tape is from a collection of radio commercials I found at a radio station in the late 1970s. This store is located at the intersection of Contra Costa Boulevard and Chilpancingo Parkway in Pleasant Hill, California, and was a favorite shopping destination of my parents. Often on Saturday afternoons, my parents baby blue 1974 Ford Maverick would be present in the parking lot, usually on the north side of the store in the lot adjacent Chilpancingo Parkway. They would enter the store using the garden shop entrance. My father thought that by parking in this parking area rather than the main parking lot, there would be less of a chance that someone would ding the finish on the Maverick.

As a kid, it seemed like K-Mart had many toys that other stores didn’t have, so I enjoyed walking around the corner from my Mom’s bookstore and looking at them. I also remember the smell of popcorn. Why do stores like that always sell popcorn?
As a child, I became addicted to Beer Nuts. The closest place to score my fix was K-Mart and their casino-like alley of gumball machines.
In 1990, while driving the 3.5 hours between the Kresge campus at UCSC and my parents home in N. Cal. I first discovered Over The Edge as 1-80 And The Letter G was being broadcast. Driving through Martinez on 6-80 with narration at 2:00 AM changed me forever, and here I am.
I definitely remember the smell of somewhat stale popcorn (or was it cigarette smoke) at Montgomery Ward in Richmond, California in the early 1960s.
Yes I remember frequent visits to the Pleasant Hill K-Mart, as well, in tow with my Mom, in the seventies. Used to love that popcorn.
StellarJay, Ever hear of or go to the White Front store? White Front was located on the north side of Chilpancingo Parkway at 560 Contra Costa Boulevard, which is now a Target Store. That’s where I bought one of my first LP records Pink Floyd “A Saucer Full of Secrets.”

I sort of became obsessed with this jingle after hearing it in this back in 2015, and I had no idea the full thing was posted here!
