What is the deal with the stereo set up that can be seen at 2:35, specifically the reel-to-reel? Is that some special casing you made for it to sit in, or is that something that was made like that? It looks amazing!
Glad You Asked. The receiver is an H. H. Scott, model 382B AM/FM Stereomaster. My father purchased this in 1970 at the White Front department store on Contra Costa Boulevard in Pleasant Hill. My father built the cabinet, and the speakers are Dynaco A25, made in Denmark. The record player is a Garrard Sl95B with low resonance inlaid Afrormosia wood tonearm. The tape recorder is a Sony TC-560D, the very one I recorded my Aunt Louise singing “Harry To The Ferry.” You can hear it here:

I inherited that setup and it is here with me in Seattle, packed away.
Most interesting! So he actually built the cabinet for it to be sort of set back inside it like that? That’s really awesome. While yours is not obviously as fancy (or garish lol), it made me think of something like this :

BTW, if you’ve never seen it, that pic comes from a book called Interior Desecrations. If you go to Google images and put in “Interior Desecrations 70s home”, you’ll get lots of pictures from it. When life was – and looked – good!
Hmmm – I tried to leave a response earlier, but it either didn’t take, or maybe the unwieldy link I had in it fouled something up. (I found a better one for this time.)
That was all most interesting! So your Dad actually designed that so the player is sort of encased in it? That looks so great. This pic is what it sort of reminded me of. (Though your setup was a little less garish and more under control! lol)

And if you or anybody else reading likes really gaudy (but great!) 70’s design like this, I first saw this pic in a great book called Interior Desecrations. If you go to Google images and type in that, plus 70s home, you’ll get a huge selection of similar things.
OK – and now when I posted that second try, the first one showed back up on the page! lol
Anyway – feel free to delete that first one.
